What's a content management system (CMS)?

A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site; much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content, you don't have to.

Why should I consider a CMS?

The biggest reason why organizations are switching over to content management systems is so that you can update and maintain your website without the need of technical help.

Other, often overlooked, reason is the increased ability for your website to generate the traffic and response you desire.

1) Your website will gain credibility as you are able to update consistently. How would your readers feel if nothing changes on your website a year after it is created? You want your business to be taken seriously, to do that you need to have fresh content on your site.

2) You also want a website that looks and feels professional. CMS's allow you to make site wide changes easily and efficiently. By implementing template & core site content changes often and automatically you not only please your readers you also free up your time to run your business instead of trying to run your website.

3) By updating your site regularly you will increase your exposure on the web and gain in search engine rankings.  Google states: “Stale content refers to documents that have not been updated for a period of time and, thus, contain stale data (for example, documents that are “no longer updated, diminished in importance, or superseded by another document”).”Many business owners spend a lot of money on a monthly basis on trying to come up on the first page of Google as a result of a keyword search. If Google does not consider their site’s content fresh, there won’t be a good return on investment on those efforts.
